One of those question that no one knows. From my research, the calculator manufacturers didn’t even know why they were arranged in that way. The first adding machine had the low numbers at top (though it looked like nothing we have today). At some point in the early 1900s (the best I could tell from other articles) they switched them to high numbers on top.
